The Nidek AL-Scan Optical Biometer is purpose-built for optometrists who want comprehensive, efficient measurements for cataract evaluation, anterior segment assessment, and pre-surgical planning. This advanced device provides sectional lens images, pupil images, and reflected double-mire ring images of the cornea, giving optometrists clear visualization for accurate diagnosis and patient education.
The AL-Scan is quick and easy for optometrists to use—requiring minimal training. Its 3D auto-tracking and auto-shot features automatically sense, align, and focus along the x, y, and z axes. Once aligned, the device automatically captures images and data, streamlining workflow and reducing exam time in busy optometry clinics.

Features:

  • 3D Auto Tracking and Auto Shot: The AL-Scan’s intuitive design means optometrists and staff require little training—streamlining implementation and daily use.
  • Sectional lens, pupil, and double mire ring images provide detailed anterior segment visualization—supporting more confident diagnostics and treatment planning in optometry clinics.
  • Sectional lens images help optometrists evaluate cataract severity, while pupil images help assess multifocal IOL candidacy.
  • Reflected double-mire ring images help detect irregular corneal surfaces, thereby supporting precise contact lens fitting and refractive evaluation.
  • 10-second measurement of six key values—saves time and improves patient throughput in busy optometry clinics.
  • Capable of measuring eyes with even dense cataracts—ensuring comprehensive care for a wider range of patients.
  • An optional built-in ultrasound biometer for extremely dense cataracts enables measurement in challenging clinical cases.
  • Detailed anterior segment observation with lens, pupil, and double mire ring imaging—empowers optometrists to deliver high-quality diagnostics and patient education.
  • IOL calculation uses precise, device-measured values for greater accuracy in refractive and cataract surgery planning.
The NIDEK AL-Scan Optical Biometer is a versatile and essential instrument for modern optometry clinics—combining advanced technology, user-friendly features, and comprehensive measurement capabilities to elevate patient care, diagnostic accuracy, and workflow efficiency.
The AL-Scan measures six key parameters for cataract evaluation in just 10 seconds: axial length, corneal curvature, anterior chamber depth, central corneal thickness, white-to-white distance, and pupil size. This rapid, comprehensive assessment boosts clinic efficiency and ensures patient comfort. 3D auto-tracking and auto-shot features make the process easy and accurate, even in the presence of dense cataracts. For extremely dense cataracts, an optional built-in ultrasound biometer enables optometrists to measure virtually any cataractous eye.

NIDEK AL-Scan

How do you use the AL-Scan in clinical practice?

Image data includes pupil positioning (especially useful for multifocal IOL planning) and Scheimpflug cross-section imaging to assess cataract density. Eight built-in formulas support accurate IOL calculations, and constants can be optimized with postoperative refractive data. The AL-Scan determines the steepest axis and overlays meridian images—helping optometrists guide surgical planning and communicate with surgical colleagues.

What are the advantages of the AL-Scan compared with other ocular biometry technologies?

The AL-Scan integrates seamlessly with the OPD-Scan III via IOL Station desktop software—enabling optometrists to access data remotely, optimize workflow, and avoid disruptions during busy clinic hours. Software upgrades are simple and can be performed without onsite service calls, keeping the clinic running smoothly.
IOL Station software predicts visual performance across a range of IOLs, helping optometrists and surgical partners select the best lens for each patient—especially those with abnormal corneas or unique anatomical considerations.
